IDRF has joined hands with a local NGO to nurture and educate tribal girls from some of the most impoverished regions in Northeast India. IDRF built a dorm for Northeastern girls at the Shiksha Bharati school in Hapur, UP. While the dorm provides a safe place to stay, the school imparts holistic development through rigorous academics, sports, music classes and training in livelihood skills such as handicrafts and herbal medicine. Many girls want to join this unique residential program, but they require full scholarships.
We are proud to announce our new Tribal Girls Endowment Fund, designed to help more tribal girls access the program. Each $5,000 donation endows a permanent space at the school for one tribal girl. While the annual interest on your donations will cover each girl’s maintenance (boarding, lodging, clothing, etc), Shiksha Bharati will also contribute its own funds, to cover their academic costs.
Though rich in natural resources and vernacular knowledge, northeastern India is plagued by violence, illiteracy and poverty. Most of these girls could not receive quality education in their home states. They leave the school as well-educated, courageous, and confident young women, ready to return to their community as catalysts for women’s empowerment.
