SOME GRASSROOTS NGOs FOR IDRF SUPPORT, 2003/04

  1. Akhil Bharatiya Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram: Established in 1952, it is now serving the vanavasi (tribal) people through 12,000 multifarious projects (like health centre, dorm, school, reading room/library, adult education, folk art / craft training/agricultural development/community centre) in 38,000(out of 136,000) tribal villages. Our grants support rural medical clinics, boys and girls dorms, primary schools, ekal vidyalayas (one-teacher schools), bee keeping, agricultural development, and computerization of office facilities.

  2. Bharatiya Cattle Resource Development Foundation: Aided by IDRF grants, it has succesfully developed an eco-friendly, Bullock Drawn Tractor “Kamdhenu” that can be afforded by small farmers; it should lead to rural prosperity and women self-empowerment. The project is now ready for take off. IDRF financing is required for implementation of an optimal blend of microcredit and/or subsidy scheme.

  3. Vivekananda Kendra: Engaged in translating Swamiji’s message of service into action by living and establishing a Non-monastic Order of dedicated, talented and trained life-workers (both men and women) and deploying them in tribal and rural areas. Our support is focused on Arun Jyoti (Arunachal) project for helping tribal and rural people to nourish, strengthen and retain their traditional culture by providing non-formal education, child/health care centers and eco-camps for youth.

  4. Bharat Kalyan Pratishthan: Creates dedicated workers and deploys them in needy areas. Runs one-teacher schools, dorms and high schools for tribal women in the northeastern and other regions that are infested by subversion. IDRF is financing mobile medical clinics, living/touring expenses for social workers, and non-formal education for children

  5. Keshava Seva Samithi (Hyderabad, AP): Provides home for destitute boys (Vatsalya Sindhu) and destitute girls (Vaidehi Ashram) from poor families; molds them into an ideal citizenry through education/vocational training and loving care. IDRF has been giving priority for supporting the girls orphanage.

Shri Ved Mandir Committee (Jammu, J & K): Runs boys orphanage, old age home, medical clinics, residential school for blind girls, senior high school, etc. Its orphanage is serving 74 boys (including 20 victims of terrorism) from seven districts, belonging to various castes/religions. IDRF is financing the construction of a badly and urgently needed girls dorm.

  7. Vikas Bharati (Bishunpur, Jharkhand): Engaged in village self-sufficiency and integrated development of tribal people through proper education, vocational training, medical clinic, water management, appropriate technology, agricultural development, and ecological awareness. During IDRF’s continued support over the past 15 years, its operations have expanded from a few villages to 2,000 villages in seven districts. IDRF funding has been need-based. In recent years, we have focused on co-finanicing its Research & Documentation Centre, guest house, monthly magazine, curriculum development for non-formal education.

  8. Sewa Bharati (Bhopal, MP): Engaged in protecting the poor tribal people from subversion and integrating them into the mainstream; focuses on non-formal as well as formal education, schools, dorms, day care and vocational centres, and medical clinics, etc. IDRF has been financing construction of dorms for girls and boys, mobile medical clinics, scholarships for deprived children’s education in engineering/medical colleges, etc.
