December 2006

Dear respected Donor/Supporter,

On behalf of thousands of beneficiaries in India – deprived of basic human needs, we express our deepest thanks for your generosity and support to IDRF. It is your continued trust in IDRF that has enabled our partners – grassroots, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) – to make a significant contribution towards rehabilitation of the victims of the tsunami disaster or the Gujarat earthquake, and towards sustainable socioeconomic development of economically-weak and/or socially-backward people in India.

Specifically, we would like to thank you for your magnanimous contribution of $2.5 million towards the relief and rehabilitation of the victims of the tsunami disaster, and the self-empowerment and mainstreaming of the needy/poor/disabled/underprivileged people in India. As detailed on the back page, IDRF’s grants to all the 91 NGOs also amounted to $2.5 million.

Once again, you had reposed your confidence in IDRF and spontaneously contributed $1.18 million towards tsunami rehabilitation, of which we have already disbursed $1.14 million to various NGOs – mostly in India, but also in Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Since we are always concerned with an effective utilization of your hard-earned money, as usual, we had earmarked only 3% of our Tsunami funds for relief purposes. A year ago, we had mailed our comprehensive tsunami report (16 pages), reflecting the field visits of IDRF volunteers/consultants and the progress reports (feedback) from NGOs that were major beneficiaries of IDRF grants.

As the next detailed report is expected to be released upon completion of all IDRF-supported tsunami rehabilitation projects, it should suffice at the present to briefly update you by providing the latest distribution of our tsunami funds as follows: Semi-Permanent/Permanent Housing and Community Centers – 46%, Childcare/Orphanages/Schools/Dorms – 25%, Mobile Medical Clinics/Yoga Centers/Potable Water – 15%, Economic Livelihood/Vocational Training – 7%, and Disaster Management/Awareness/Response – 7%.

Year 2005 marked the end of our intensive involvement in the rehabilitation of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake victims. It was an unprecedented experience for IDRF to raise $3.0 million (previous record was only $615,000 for 1999 Orissa super cyclone), and it took us five years (against expected four years) to disburse your hard-earned money for mutually agreed reconstruction/rehabilitation/development projects to the credible NGOs in India.

IDRF continued to make significant contributions towards its long-term objectives of sustainable economic/social development so that India will soon be respected as a developed country in the community of nations. Our annual grants for development amounted to $1.11 million, whose broad functional distribution is given on the back page.

Once again, we express our gratitude to you, as well as to our partner NGOs in India, for IDRF’s continued success and remarkable accomplishments.
