Disaster Relief & Rehabilitation

IDRF has been very active in rebuilding communities in the aftermath of various natural and man-made disasters.  Once people’s immediate needs are met by providing them with relief kits, our programs focus on enabling enduring and sustainable development in that area.  Some of these calamities devastated communities that were already living in extreme poverty and deprivation.

Rather than focusing on transitional relief, IDRF gives priority to long-term rehabilitation, with the goal of turning disasters into opportunities for new sustainable development programs. IDRF continues to partner with trustworthy local NGOs for years after a particular disaster, recognizing that these events can permanently affect people’s livelihoods.

1999 Odisha SupercycloneRehabilitation (video)

When a supercyclone devastated highly-vulnerable communities in Odisha,  IDRF plunged into a special campaign and raised over $600,000 for relief and rehabilitation.  These projects included four primary health care centers and three medical vans.  The vans helped 6,000 people each month and prevented the onset of dangerous, post-flood diseases. To ensure long-term access to safe water, IDRF installed 375 hand-pumps in the affected areas.  IDRF also improved the livelihoods of hundreds of families: through distributing deep-water-tolerant rice seeds to farmers, and providing tailoring training for women, 30,000 coconut trees for coconut farmers, and 80,000 saplings for kitchen gardens.

2001 Gujarat Earthquake Rehabilitation (video)
IDRF succeeded in raising $3 million after this devastating earthquake shook Gujarat.  IDRF oversaw the rehabilitation of two entire villages – including water infrastructure, school facilities, and new homes- and a myriad of smaller projects.  Several IDRF volunteers visited the programs in the earthquake affected area.

2004 Indian ocean Tsunami Rehabilitation (video)

IDRF raised more than $1.1 million, supporting village rehabilitation, orphanages, water harvesting, and disease prevention in Tamil Nadu, Indonesia, and Thailand.
