Education and Skill Development
Giving Back: NRIs’ Dreams Come True….
Education is fundamental for economic growth, lifting the poor and marginalized out of poverty, achieving full human potential, and developing an equitable and just society. India has one of the largest education systems in the world, with more than 1.5 million schools, 8.5 million teachers, and more than 250 million children from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. However, there continues to be huge gaps in education access, quality, and results, especially for the marginalized groups. According to recent reports, while enrollment of students in primary level has gone up, there remain significant issues:
- 36 percent of students drop out before completing elementary education;
- 50 percent of adolescents do not complete secondary education;
- Half of primary school-going children – which constitutes nearly 50 million children – do not achieve grade appropriate learning levels; and
- Approximately 20 million children do not attend pre-school;
Reports from World Bank and UNICEF have shown that removing barriers to access and providing holistic quality education is the key to improving outcomes.
IDRF programs focus on increasing affordable access, and providing quality and holistic education and vocational training across India and Nepal, with a special emphasis on girls and tribal children.
